meat...

meat is making me sad lately..i lived mainly vegetarian for the last few month..because i thought a lot about how bad meat and milk is actually for the human body...i dont wanna go into a rant about this subject now...i lived for a few years as a veggy when i was a teenager..but that had other reasons..so this time i wanted to stop because i think meat and milk might be bad for me..i m not a huge meateater anyway...mainly i eat chicken and fish...i try to avoid red meat and dont eat pork at all...but..and there is a HUGE BUT....the fact that i stopped again to eat meat has made me sad when i started to think about the fact that there are so many dishes and recipes i will never cook again..dont get me wrong..i dont think that i will miss eating but cooking them..recipes i learned to cook from my aunt , my grandmother and other people..people who are dead now but who are with me when i cook these things...avoiding meat also has an influence on my social/family life since there a certain celebrations each year held at my home..where i cook traditional dishes...which i do since years...and my family expects me to cook them..of course i could cook them but not eat them..but that would destroy the moment with my family too...so..what am i going to do?...its not easy..especially not with thanksgiving coming soon...where everyone expects me to cook a huge turkey filled with apricots and minced meat and sage....

dont have a pic of my turkey but pics of a rabbit/rabbit legs i recently cooked for a dinnerparty...i dont have a pic of the end result but i made a sauce with cream, wine and ajvar...which was really really good...

I don't eat a tremendous amount of red meat, but I do love it. I grew up in cattle country; it was all around us; a staple in our diets.

Not sure I could give it up.

The rabbit looks wonderful.

Oh - I just got distracted by noticing Demure Lemur's #Gay Handjobs' post out of the corner of my eye.

I have to say, D, I really think you should just eat it for the party times. It's probably often enough that it won't bother your system, but rare enough that you can still feel fairly pure, if that's what you're after. Don't swap vegan for family sadness, you don't have to.

No rules!

I agree with Jo. Make your own rules. If it is good for the soul, it is good for the body.

Ms Moon - really? Does that count for chocolate chip cookie dough too? :)

Craig - I'm looking at the rabbit and trying to see wonderful but all I see is creepy looking bunny corpse that makes me feel a bit sick. It's a strange world, isn't it, with all of us so different.

Jo, we ate a lot of critters in the place I grew up too. :-)

Also, I did have the occasional rabbit when I was stationed in Germany.

Squirrel, Craig? Ground Dog? :)

Craig Sorensen said...

No squirrel.

Just otter, weasel, beaver, that sort of thing.

Just kidding.

Of course! And cooked to perfection over the hot exhaust manifold of a 1963 Dodge pick up truck with a gun rack in the back window.

Poor Dan must be wondering where he lost control of his blog...

hell no...:-) i totally would try to eat a weasel or beaver...i dont like squirrels...and i love otters..so...but the rest would be totally cool to try...i once tried ginea pig in a tibetan restaurant...oh wait no..it was a mongolian restaurant!

Bodhi saw the picture and sked what it was - and when I said it was a rabbit, he poked his lower lip out very very far, and leaned his chin on his hand, and asked me sadly what its name was.

Dan, better than a Mongolian in a Guinea Pig restaurant!

Danielle said...

oh that cute bodherino of yours..:-)

uhm...a mongolian...hmmmm...makeshomersimpsonsound*

Mmm rabbit.

I'm with the girls - do the thing that will bring maximum happiness for you, whatever that is.

Wow. Things are lively at your place.

I'm with Jo and the girls also. However, I will add a note of caution. I have had veggie friends who ate meat once in a while and discovered that if one is going to do that, it's best not to over indulge during those times. Some people's body have a very hard time after they've been off the meat to go back. So, I guess I say that while I do agree that having it at family times may be the ticket, just try not to have too much... which may be a little difficult because maybe you've been missing it? So drink more wine instead! :-)

I like how you said your grandma and your aunt and others were with you while you were making their recipes. It reminds me of home.

Cool blog you got here. It would be great to read a bit more about this theme. The only thing it would also be great to see on this blog is a few pictures of some gizmos.
