the no-age

"die young and leave a beautiful corpse" a famous painter once said to my mother...that was back in the 80ies...my grandmother married as a 29 year old virgin..that was 1940 i think...back then she was what you called old...sharon stone graced the cover of the latest issue of the paris match magazine...the title reads "j´ai 50 ans, et alors" which you could translate loosly as " i m 50..so what!"..a while ago i spoke to my artist friend minerva as well as to our writer friend donna about age...minerva told me she left her lover because he told her she should be more settled, less active..more like a woman in the age of 53..am i old? she asked me sitting over our martinis in a bar in aix la chapelle...i was surprised about that question..like donna i thought that it was allready official that 50 isnt old anymore...when i was a child a woman of 50 looked like a woman of the age of 50..and yes, back then you were old ...but now that people keep on living ..now that you can see sophia loren in the prelli calendar..a beautiful woman of 80 years..age has shiffted and changed...when i say that women today dont have to look old anymore i dont speak about the people who try so hard to look young...i speak more about this kind of woman that i call "the no-age women"...you see those women arent 20 anymore..they also not 30 or 40 anymore..but you cant point your finger and say "minerva you are 53"..simply because she doesent look "that old"..sure she has some wrinkles..because she laughs a lot..and sure she has whole lot of grey in her once black mass of hair..but still she doesent look old..she looks like an attraktive woman in her best years...still so many women are afraid of aging..the think about aging as a desease..but why? maybe for men 50 isnt the best age..but for women its a good time..many female friends told me how much better their sexlife is since they turned 50...and a few of them even started a new life..a new love..a new carriere...i m 50..so what...50 isnt the end anymore..50 is the middle...

Actually, I never much cared for Sharon Stone and thought that famous "no-panties" scene in Basic Instinct just showed how stupid men could be. But I have to say, she looks pretty awesome in Match!

Love the concept of "no-age" for men and women, although of course women have traditionally had the shorter shelf life. I definitely got more looks from strangers at 20, but even then I knew it was all about their desire and nothing about me. I know myself now and my sex life is tons better, even than when I was 40!

Not everyone can appreciate a fine aged Bordeaux, but those who do, are getting the best the grape can offer.

So much more to say, but thanks for popping the cork on this topic, Danielle!

That's funny Donna, b/c I never really cared for Sharon Stone either. She does look amazing. Those loooong, legs, well-toned body and damn, her tits are so perky and perfect.

Well, of course we're all getting older, I suppose. It's funny, b/c I actually enjoy it. For all the cliche'd reasons too: wiser, wiser, wiser and of course just feeling so comfortable in my skin. I think that alone removes at least 10 years from a person's original birth date.

Nice post, Danielle. And it's nice to hear that a much younger man appreciates older women -

i remember the long emails we shared about that subject already but when my friend minerva asked me almost the same question that one of my grand cousins recently asked me..i had to write about the subject in public...

"Not everyone can appreciate a fine aged Bordeaux, but those who do, are getting the best the grape can offer."...i m sure you knew i d love that sentence..didnt you?..:-)

@ neve

hey chica...:-) i knew i smelled something good when i came in..:-)

i have to admit that i loved sharon stone since i saw basic instinct in the age of..hm..12???anyway..i totally was impressed..not by the panty-less sequence but by the character she played..a wild, free and indipendet women who just did what she wanted to..that was a whole new concept..actually like the original vamps from the 20ies..just without underwear...

my favourite scene is when she says in the begining: ..and now fuck off..please..

i really liked her since then..even though i always thought of her as a bad actrice (but she was great in casino as well as in broken flowers"..but she is a beautiful woman..now more then back then..and she does a lot of benefit performances as well as she collects a lot pof money for organisations that host a lot of human and important projects..
seems like there beats a good heart underneath those perky tits..:-)

As a woman who is on the far side of 50, thanks for this post Danielle. I liked what Neve said about being "comfortable in my skin." I had a friend say that to me the other day - that I look much more comfortable in my skin than I did when she first met me. I liked that.

Maybe more than age, experience and perspective, are what can make life so much better at this age. Not everyone has that. They strive to be just be versions of who they were in their 20s - or even worse, try hard to look that way via surgery. Personally, I'm very glad that at my age I don't "have to" act my age.

"I'm very glad that at my age I don't "have to" act my age...."

i really like that sentence..and it reminds me somehow of yoko onos pictures in a fashion magazin about 3 years ago (she was about 70 then)..she showed up with very short hair..high heels and short short short skirts ..a lot people wrote letters how impossible and bad that outfit and behavior was for a woman of that age..and yoko answered: " whats that? agism? why am i not allowed to wear what i wore when i was 20?"...

act like my age..what doese that actually mean? ...i vote for "act the way you are..behave like the person you are"....

i, myself..dont really believe in things like age and genders anymore...

anyway, robin..thank you for stopping and sharing your opinion with us...and that from the wild..you are still in the woods arent you???

That Yoko Ono is always breaking the rules and I love her for it (I'd take her over Sharon Stone any day!)

How great to hear wise words from wise and wonderful women. I also feel so much more myself, so much more comfortable now than I did when I was supposedly in my prime. We're fortunate to be able to define our own "primes" now! And we are ;-).

Thanks again for a great post, Danielle.

@ donna

and you grace the post with a great coment:

We're fortunate to be able to define our own "primes" now!

i think that is the real freedom the "no-age" gives to us all!!!
